Why Norwood Homeowners Are Moving to Heat Pumps

Living in Norwood, MA comes with the familiar rhythm of New England seasons—cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. For many homeowners still using traditional gas furnaces, the temperature swings can mean rising energy bills and aging, inefficient systems. Fortunately, modern heat pump technology gives Norwood residents a better way to stay comfortable all year long.

Replacing your old gas furnace with a heat pump system is more than a home upgrade—it’s a strategic step toward reducing energy consumption, lowering maintenance costs, and improving indoor comfort. If you're considering how to enhance your home’s HVAC system, now is the perfect time to explore the benefits of switching from gas to a ducted heat pump.

Convert Gas to Heat Pump Without Compromising Comfort

How Heat Pumps Work in Norwood’s Climate

One of the most common questions local homeowners have is, “Can a heat pump keep me warm through our chilly Norwood winters?” The answer is yes. Today’s air source heat pump models are designed to provide efficient heating even when outdoor temperatures drop well below freezing. Thanks to advancements in inverter technology and cold-climate heat pump design, you get reliable comfort year-round.

In fact, Massachusetts is a leader in promoting cold-climate heat pumps because these systems reduce carbon emissions while delivering consistent warmth throughout the heating season.

Dual Heating: The Hybrid System Approach

Transitioning from gas doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Many Norwood homeowners opt for a hybrid system, which pairs a new air source heat pump with an existing fossil fuel furnace. This setup offers the flexibility to use the heat pump most of the time, and only engage the gas furnace when outside temperatures plummet below a certain threshold.

Hybrid solutions are ideal during the transition period and can reduce annual gas use significantly while offering unbeatable comfort and efficiency.

Financial Incentives for Converting to a Heat Pump

Thanks to Mass Save and other regional programs, major incentives are currently available for homeowners in Norwood looking to convert from gas to a ducted heat pump system. Rebate offerings can include:

  • Up to $10,000 in Mass Save rebates for eligible full-system replacements
  • No-cost home energy assessments to assess your heating and cooling needs
  • Financing options including 0% HEAT Loans for qualified improvements

Replace Gas Furnace With Heat Pump: Key Benefits for Norwood Homes

Year-Round Heating & Cooling in One System

Unlike a gas furnace, a ducted heat pump offers both heating and cooling through a single, integrated system. This is a huge win for Norwood homes that rely on separate systems for winter heating and summer air conditioning. Fewer components mean lower maintenance and replacement costs in the long term.

The result? More comfort, less hassle, and streamlined system operation throughout the year.

Energy Efficiency and Lower Monthly Bills

Air source heat pumps work by transferring heat rather than generating it through combustion. This makes them incredibly energy efficient—up to 3 times more efficient than conventional gas furnaces. That means lower energy use and reduced utility bills, particularly during shoulder seasons when full heating isn’t required.

  • No more wasting energy heating unoccupied spaces
  • Consistent airflow reduces indoor temperature fluctuations
  • Smart thermostats can optimize performance and further control bills

A More Environmentally Responsible Option

Converting from gas to a heat pump is one of the most impactful steps a homeowner in Norwood can take to reduce their carbon footprint. With Massachusetts aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, households that move away from fossil fuels today are helping lead the charge toward a cleaner future.

You’re not just upgrading your comfort system—you’re part of a broader community movement toward sustainability.

“Switching from gas to a heat pump isn’t just practical—it’s one of the smartest ways Norwood residents can contribute to a greener New England.”

Gas to Heat Pump Conversion: What Norwood Homeowners Can Expect

Home Evaluation and Load Calculation

Every home is different. Before installing a ducted heat pump, SumZero Energy Systems ensures a full assessment of your home’s heating and cooling needs. Technicians analyze your existing ductwork, insulation, window quality, and more to determine the right equipment size and setup. This prevents over or under-sizing, a common issue in retrofits.

Ductwork Modifications or Enhancements

Older homes in Norwood often have duct systems sized for gas-fired furnaces, which may operate at higher temperatures than air source heat pumps. Our team reviews your current duct condition and makes recommendations on whether duct sealing, insulation, or resizing is needed to maintain proper airflow and performance.

This is essential to ensure your unit doesn’t work harder than necessary and delivers optimal comfort in every season.

Timeline and Installation Process

Most gas to heat pump conversions in Norwood can be completed within a few days, depending on the complexity of the installation:

  • Day 1: System removal and electrical preparation
  • Day 2-3: Heat pump system installation and duct connection
  • Day 4: Final testing, thermostat setup, and walk-through

Throughout the process, SumZero Energy Systems keeps homeowners informed and ensures all local permitting and inspection requirements are met before final activation.

Replace Gas Furnace With Heat Pump for Long-Term Savings

Maintenance and Lifespan Expectations

Compared to gas systems, heat pumps are simple to maintain. They don’t produce soot or combustion by-products, and they contain fewer moving parts prone to wear. With regular filter changes and seasonal inspections, your new system can operate efficiently for up to 15–20 years.

Moreover, modern air source heat pumps notify you about maintenance needs via your smartphone when paired with smart HVAC controls.

Reduced Risk of Carbon Monoxide Leaks

Unlike gas furnaces, heat pumps do not involve combustion. This eliminates the risk of carbon monoxide buildup or gas leaks inside your home—offering a safer, healthier environment for your family.

What Local Homeowners Are Saying

See how SumZero has helped local homeowners stay comfortable year-round with energy-efficient heat pump solutions.

The first word that comes to mind is OUTSTANDING when I think about SumZero. My husband and I just bought a home with a very old HVAC system and knew we needed an update. The first thing we did was speak with Sarai Ortiz who explained to us all of the steps we needed to take in order to see what system was best for us. She was very helpful and followed up with us throughout the entire process. Hearing that we needed a new system, David Sampaio promptly came to our house to give us a quote on what system he thought was best. My husband loved what he presented and did not hesitate to take the offer. Since we did not have the expenses for the system at hand, Sarai walked us through getting a heat loan through Mass Save. This process was so easy and the loan was finalized within a week! We were so excited to get things rolling, but of course things were on hold due to the pandemic. Even though we had to wait a couple more weeks than anticipated, Sarai and David kept us in the know and answered every question that we had. Once the time came to have the new system, SumZero was more than happy to make us a priority! The workers were on time, efficient, and very kind. Not once did I worry or question the quality of work they were doing. After two days, the work was complete! Daniel was able to walk me through what was installed and how to use the new thermostat, which we love! We now have a home that is comfortable to live in no matter the season. If you’re looking for a new HVAC system, SumZero is the one to call!

Let me start by saying that the actual work that was performed by the people on site was great. Totally spot-on. They were friendly, careful, clean, considerate, and left a nice looking install when finished. The system operates very nicely, keeping my house warm with no need to run the oil heat. The sales process was very smooth. The salesman, Paul, was very knowledgable, honest, didn't try to push anything, and was very patient with all the many questions that I had to help me understand the ins and outs of heat pump heating. I'm confident that the system I bought is the right one for my home. While I would give the actual installed system a five star review, I had to take a star off due to the difficulty I had around getting my rebate. My install was performed not long after the new year when the MA rebate options were in flux (though now the 2022 rebates are set). Since the new rebates were very likely to be larger than the old for my setup, I wanted to make sure I got the new. Despite trying several times pre- and post-install to make sure the proper rebate request was filed, this didn't happen. I only discovered the old amount was requested by looking at a public site that tracks rebate requests. But here's where the good news is- even a month or two later once one of the owners of SumZero did find out about this issue, he called me personally and gave me his guarantee that they'd make it right since they realized they dropped the ball on it. They're refiling the rebate request, and in the mean time, have sent me a check for the difference (more than $3,000) so I don't have to wait for the rebate to be processed. The owner also assured me this is something they'll be paying closer attention to to make sure it doesn't happen again with future customers.
