Gas-to-Heat-Pump Conversion Services

Gas-to-heat-pump conversion is the process of replacing a traditional gas heating system with an energy-efficient electric heat pump to reduce utility costs and carbon emissions. In Massachusetts, this upgrade provides year-round comfort, helps lower your energy bills, and supports a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Replace gas furnace with heat pump and enjoy year-round comfort

Making the switch from gas to a heat pump in Massachusetts isn’t just a smart upgrade—it’s a future-ready investment in comfort and cost savings. Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling using electricity, helping you stay cozy in winter and cool in summer, all while lowering your utility bills.

What is an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump transfers heat between the indoors and outdoors, efficiently warming your home in the winter and cooling it during summer months.

  • Uses electricity—not gas—making it safer and cleaner
  • Offers whisper-quiet operation for a peaceful home
  • Delivers steady comfort without temperature swings
"Most homeowners don’t realize that a heat pump can reduce heating-related carbon emissions by up to 40%, making it one of the most impactful home upgrades for the environment."

Who benefits the most from conversion?

If your current gas furnace is outdated, costly to maintain, or uneven in performance, now is the perfect time to upgrade. Heat pumps work especially well in Massachusetts homes due to strong energy efficiency programs that encourage sustainable choices.

  • Older homes looking to improve energy performance
  • Households wanting to cut energy costs
  • Families ready for more quiet, even heating and cooling

Convert gas to heat pump with flexible system options

No two homes are the same, which is why there are several options when choosing a heat pump system. From full replacements to partial upgrades, there's a solution for every space and budget.

Considering a hybrid system?

A hybrid system combines a traditional gas furnace with a heat pump, giving you the best of both worlds.

  • Automatically switches between gas and electric for efficiency
  • Ideal for Massachusetts winters where temps fluctuate
  • Minimizes your fuel use while maximizing comfort

Ducted or ductless? What to know

Whether you're replacing an old duct system or want a sleeker solution, heat pumps are adaptable. A ducted heat pump works with existing vents, while ductless units are perfect for homes without central ducts.

  • Ductless installs are minimally invasive
  • Ducted systems can use what you already have
  • Both provide powerful, consistent airflow

What Local Homeowners Are Saying

See how SumZero has helped local homeowners stay comfortable year-round with energy-efficient heat pump solutions.

We had a great experience with SumZero installing 6 minisplits and 2 condensers. Long story short, we initially went with a different HVAC company (never having met with SumZero), and that company strung us along for months (partly due to genuine supply chain issues). When installation day finally came they showed up and said they couldn't do the job. So back to the drawing board. We then met with 7 or 8 HVAC installers, most of whom we hadn't met with before. SumZero's quote was middle of the pack. Unlike everyone else who was fine maxing out the minisplit BTUs, SumZero very much cautioned against oversizing the units and now that I've learned more about these technologies I really appreciate their working to size the system correctly. They also split up our two zones in a smarter way than anyone else was proposing. The SumZero team that came on install day were among the nicest contractors we've worked with on any of our various house issues we've had. After install we were having a smell issue with a couple of our units. Our SumZero contact came by to check on the issue, and I so appreciated how he didn't try to gaslight me. The smell wasn't happening at first when he arrived and instead of saying "Well ok, I guess there's no issue!" he stuck around and seemed genuinely curious and motivated to figure out what was going on. He did eventually smell it. They sent their techs out promptly after that and discovered there was something that wasn't wired correctly that was causing units to fire at the wrong times which caused excess condensation, and they fixed it. For what it's worth, we discovered after picking SumZero's quote that some friends of ours used them and also had a good experience.
